CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

GROVES

Groves jolted awake. The suspension on the military truck only allowed her a few minutes of sleep at a time, and she was barely able to hold her eyelids open. She moved her head then winced due to how stiff her neck was.

The colonel in the front passenger’s seat was talking into his radio, but he was keeping his voice low, so she only caught every other word. Evidently they were nearing some place important.

He looked over his shoulder. “We’re almost at the safe house. Get some rest and eat. You’re going to need your energy. Four hours and we’re back on the road.”

The small convoy was rising up a slope within a heavily forested area, but apart from that, Groves had no idea where they were or where they were heading.

A large block-like building was visible against the light sky, which the humvees drove alongside then stopped.

Greg started to get out.

“Wait,” said Manter. “Kenning and Boone are checking the building out.”

“I thought this place was meant to be safe?”

“Aint nowhere safe anymore.” He looked in the rear mirror at Greg. “Enjoy your walk earlier?”

Greg frowned, turning away. Groves knew what Greg wanted to do when he asked her to join him, and she knew how his attempt to escape would end. With a sore arm. Her bracelet had been demonstrated to her soon after it was placed on her wrist, and she had no intention of feeling that kind of pain ever again. She would complete this mission, the bracelet will be removed, she would be given a good supply of the vaccine and she will be free to try to survive somewhere in the eastern half of the country.

Manter’s radio came to life again, but Greg got out before the colonel told him he could do so. Groves started to as well, but Manter started to talk.

“He going to play ball?”

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“He tried escaping earlier.” The colonel held up a computer tablet, which showed a simple map, and a line drawn across it. Part of the line, at the end, outside an orange circle, was red.

“He needed to learn how the bracelets work. Now he knows. He’s old. His heart won’t survive another attempt.”

“Then you better make sure he doesn’t try that. You told us you’re both needed to get the kid. So if he’s fails…”

“I know. I’ll talk to him.”

“Good. That’s all I wanted to hear.” Manter got out, she following.

She looked up at the four story building towering above her. She guessed it was a school from the entrance layout and rows of windows. A brisk wind blew across her, making her turn around to face branches and leaves swaying. A forest which gave no hint of what lay within it, bordered the road they had driven in on.

“You can sleep out here if you want, Groves,” said the colonel.

She turned and headed up the steps.
